    Vanessa Ritzel ist Assistentin der Institutsdirektorin und des Teams. Zusätzlich unterstützt Vanessa Ritzel den Sonderforschungsbereich 1648.

    Vanessa Ritzel ist bereits seit 2020 am UKE und war zuvor in dem Sekretariat der Urologie tätig.
    Seit Ende 2024 ist Frau Ritzel am IIRVD.

    Alena Sendzik

    Alena Sendzik ist die Assistentin der Institutsdirektorin und des Teams.

    Alena Sendzik war zuvor in der Baubranche tätig und ist seit Anfang 2022 am IIRVD.

    Sarah Wiesner

    Dr. rer. nat. Sarah Wiesner

    Sarah Wiesner ist Referentin der Institutsdirektorin am IIRVD.

    Sarah Wiesner ist Diplom-Geographin. Ihre geowissenschaftliche Doktorarbeit absolvierte sie im Klimafoschungs-Exzellenzcluster CliSAP der Universität Hamburg. Im Anschluss führte sie zunächst Hamburg weitere Messkampagnen durch und koordinierte schließlich ein meteorologisches Forschungsprojekt mit deutschlandweiten Partnern. Am Dekanat der MIN Fakultät der Universität Hamburg war sie zuletzt Ansprechpartnerin für Promovierende und Betreuende, wobei sie insbesondere Workshops zur Verbesserung der Betreuung und Guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis veranstaltete.

    Seit 2024 ist Sarah Wiesner am IIRVD.

    Dr. rer. nat. Svenja Hardtke

    Am IIRVD beschäftigt sich Svenja Hardtke mit Wissenschafts- und Qualitätsmanagment der klinischen Studien, ebenso wie dem Personal- und Budgetmanagement.

    Svenja Hardtke studierte an der Universität Greifswald Biologie. Ihre Promotion absolvierte sie am Institut für Immunologie der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover unter der Leitung von Prof. Reinhold Förster. In ihren Studien untersuchte sie die CXCR5 Expression vonTfH Zellen. Im Anschluss wechselte sie an das HepNet Study-House, wo sie die Koordination der klinischen und wissenschaflichen Studien, im Bereich der Hepatitis Viren, leitete.

    Seit 2019 ist sie Mitarbeiterin am UKE im Team von Prof. Addo.

    Julia Häberlein, M.Sc.

    Julia Häberlein ist seit Januar 2025 Referentin für Öffentlichkeitsarbeit im neuen DFG-Sonderforschungsbereich 1648 "Emerging Viruses" am IIRVD.

    Ihr Masterstudium in Biologie mit Schwerpunkt Molekularbiologie und Mikrobiologie absolvierte Julia an der Universität Hamburg. Seit 2021 arbeitet sie bereits im Bereich der Wissenschaftskommunikation. In vorangehenden Anstellungen war sie am Bernhard-Nocht-Institut für Tropenmedizin und am Leibniz-Institut für Virologie tätig.

    Zu ihren Aufgaben im Sonderforschungsbereich "Emerging Viruses" gehören die Betreuung der Website, das Verfassen von Pressemitteilungen und journalistischen Texten, die Recherche von wissenschaftlichen Hintergrundinformationen sowie die Planung von internen und externen Veranstaltungen.

    Melanie Richter

    Dr. rer. nat. Melanie Richter

    Melanie Richter ist Forschungsreferentin am IIRVD und Managerin der Research Area ‚Neu auftretende Infektionskrankheiten‘ am Deutschen Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (DZIF).

    Melanie Richter studierte Chemie und Biologie in Marburg und Bielefeld. Ihre Doktorarbeit absolvierte sie am Zentrum für Molekulare Neurobiologie (ZMNH) des Universitätsklinikums Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) unter der Leitung von Frau Prof. Melitta Schachner. Im Anschluss arbeitete sie als postdoctoral research fellow in der Abteilung von Dr. Elena Pasquale am Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in La Jolla, CA, USA an Eph-Rezeptor Tyrosine Kinasen im reifenden Nervensystem und in Prostata- und Brustkrebsmodellen, bevor sie an das ZMNH zurückkehrte, um in der Forschergruppe ‚Neuronal Development‘ von Dr. Froylan Calderon de Anda Untersuchungen an dem Autismus-Risikofaktor Taok2 im humanen 16p11.2 del Hintergrund während der neuronalen Entwicklung und Neuronalen Entwicklungsstörungen zu untersuchen.

    Seit Mai 2023 ist Melanie Richter am IIRVD.

    Dr. rer. nat. Susanne Ziegler

    Susanne Ziegler arbeitet seit 2022 als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am IIRVD.

    Ihre Hauptaufgabe besteht in der Koordination des DFG-geförderten Sonderforschungsbereichs 1648 „Emerging Viruses“ . Zu ihren zentralen Verantwortlichkeiten gehören das administrative Management des Verbundes, die Budgetverwaltung sowie die Organisation von Veranstaltungen.

    Darüber hinaus ist sie LOM-Beauftragte, Koordinatorin für Qualitätsmanagement und verantwortlich für das öffentliche Erscheinungsbild des Instituts, einschließlich der Pflege der Website und des Corporate Designs.

    Susanne Ziegler studierte Angewandte Biologie und Biomedizin in Rheinbach und Bonn. Ihre Promotion absolvierte sie am Institut für Virologie des Universitätsklinikums Essen. Ein Schwerpunkt ihrer Forschung war die globale Sequenzdiversität des Hepatitis-C-Virus. Anschließend wechselte sie an das LIV (ehemals HPI), wo sie zu Geschlechterunterschieden in der angeborenen Immunantwort, insbesondere Typ-I-Interferonen, bei Virusinfektionen forschte.

  • Briegel, Anna Sophie

    Dr. med. Anna-Sophie Briegel

    Anna-Sophie Briegel ist seit November 2025 als Studienärztin am IIRVD tätig. Zu ihren Aufgaben zählen die Durchführung klinischer Studien am IIRVD entsprechend der regulatorischen Vorgaben sowie die Unterstützung und Begleitung von Studienteilnehmenden im gesamten Studienverlauf.

    Sie studierte Humanmedizin an der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover und der Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, wo sie im Jahre 2010 ihr Studium mit dem Staatsexamen abschloss.

    Das Thema ihrer Dissertation 2016 im Bereich Nephrologie/ Internistische Intensivmedizin lautete „Blutungskomplikationen und Blutproduktebedarf während Nierenersatzverfahren bei kritisch kranken Patienten: eine Subanalyse der prospektiven CONVINT-Studie“.

    Ihre ärztliche Weiterbildung absolvierte sie in Hamburg in der Anästhesiologie (Asklepios Klinik Barmbek), Geriatrie (Agaplesion Diakonieklinikum Hamburg) sowie in verschiedenen Praxen der hausärztlichen Versorgung in der Allgemeinmedizin.

    Seit 2023 ist sie Fachärztin für Allgemeinmedizin.

    Stephanie Petereit

    Stephanie Petereit

    Stephanie Petereit arbeitet als Study Nurse am IIRVD.

    Seit 1999 ist Stephanie Petereit bereits am UKE. Sie begann als Krankenschwester in der Orthopädie, wechselte dann in die Intensivmedizin der Herz-Gefäßchirugie als Fachkrankenschwester für Intensiv- und Anästhesie und Atmungstherapeutin in der Klinik für Intensivmedizin.

    Seit 2022 verstärkt Stephanie Petereit das Studienteam des IIRVD.

    Claudia Schlesner

    Claudia Schlesner ist die Studienkoordinatorin am IIRVD.

    Seit 1991 ist Claudia Schlesner bereits am UKE und durchlief mehrere Stationen. Als Krankenschwester war sie als Stationsleitung in der Infektiologie tätig und wechselte später in die Studienkoordination der Infektiologie und Hepatologie, sowie im Bereich der Kardiologie und Kinderkardiologie.

    Seit 2020 ist sie als Studienkoordinatorin der Infektiologie für Marylyn M. Addo tätig.

    Saskia Winzer

    Saskia Winzer ist seit 2024 als Studienärztin am IIRVD tätig und kümmert sich um die Betreuung und Durchführung von klinischen Studien sowie um die Unterstützung von Studienteilnehmern während des gesamten Prozesses.

    Sie studierte Humanmedizin an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel mit Famulaturen in Innerer Medizin und Pädiatrie. Ihr praktisches Jahr absolvierte sie am UKE in der Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe.

  • Ilka Grewe

    Dr. med. Ilka Grewe

    Ilka Grewe is a resident physician in Internal Medicine and a Clinician Scientist in Infectious Diseases ( iDfellows Clinician Scientist Programm ). At the IIRVD her work focuses on the role of follicular T-helper cells after vaccination against MERS-CoV und SARS-CoV-2.

    Ilka Grewe studied medicine at the University of Hamburg with clinical rotations in Accra (Ghana) and Manila (Philippines). For her degree as “Dr. med.” she conducted research on T-cells and monocytes in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.

    She started her clinical training in 2022 at the UKE.

    PD Dr. med. Robin Kobbe

    Robin Kobbe works at the IIRVD as a Clinician Scientist in the design, implementation and evaluation of clinical studies and is currently coordinating an academic GIZ clinic partnership project on neonatal sepsis together with the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

    Robin Kobbe is a qualified specialist in paediatrics and youth medicine with an additional qualification in tropical medicine. He completed a postgraduate diploma course in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology from the University of Oxford (UK) with distinction.

    Robin Kobbe studied human medicine in Hamburg and did his doctorate in the field of malaria tropica at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg. He is currently on the advisory board of the German Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases (DGPI) and is involved in the Commission for Global Child Health of the German Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ).

    Dr. rer. nat. Leonie Mayer

    Leonie Mayer is a postdoctoral researcher at the IIRVD working on the T cell immune response after coronavirus vaccination.

    Leonie Mayer studied Biology in Maastricht und Paris. She then did an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Vaccinology in France, Spain and Belgium. For her master thesis, she studied the humoral immune response after malaria vaccination.

    PD Dr. rer. nat. Toni L. Meister

    Toni Meister is a scientist at the IIRVD.

    Toni Meister received a Bachelor of Science in Plant Biotechnology with a focus on molecular biological methods from Leibniz Universität Hannover in 2015. In 2017, she completed her Master of Science in Biomedicine at the Hannover Medical School.

    In 2021, she obtained her doctorate in the Department for Molecular and Medical Virology at Ruhr University Bochum. Her doctoral research focused on viral and host determinants in the Hepatitis E Virus replication cycle. Additionally, she contributed to various research projects related to SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses. Following her Ph.D., Toni Luise Meister worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the same department, further expanding her virology expertise across a variety of viruses. Her work has been recognized multiple times with the Best-Season Paper Award from the Society for Virology. She also served as an expert in the development of guidelines for handling aerosol-transmitted pathogens and is a member of the Society for Virology (GfV) and Infect-Net.

    Since October 2023, she has been employed as a Senior Postdoc in the Institute for Infection Research and Vaccine Development (IIRVD) funded through the DZIF research area Emerging Infections.

    Dr. rer. nat. Leonie Marie Weskamm

    As a postdoc at the IIRVD, Marie Weskamm is responsible for the scientific laboratory coordination. She is working on the characterization of vaccine-induced immune responses, with a focus on antibody functionality and memory B cells.

    Marie Weskamm studied Molecular Life Science at the University of Lübeck. During her master thesis at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for tropical medicine she analyzed sex-specific differences of human monocytes. Since 2019 she has been part of Prof. Addo’s team, where she did her doctorate on humoral and B cell immune responses following vaccination against the human coronaviruses MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2.

    Dr. rer. nat. Tamara Zoran

    After gaining her Master’s degree in Microbiology (Slovenia), she worked at the University Hospital Innsbruck (Austria) on diagnostics of fungal infections and antifungal resistance. She pursued her PhD degree in Infection and Immunity at the University of Würzburg, investigating characteristic molecular signatures and risk factors indicating pulmonary aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients.

    At the IIRVD she is investigating innate immunity and sex differences in the immune responses to MVA vaccine candidates against emerging respiratory viruses.

    Valentin Bärreiter, M.Sc.

    Valentin A. Bärreiter is a PhD student at the IIRVD.
    In his doctoral research, he investigates the adaptive immune system using a tonsil organoid model stimulated with various viral vector vaccines and vaccine candidates. His work focuses in particular on B- and T-cell differentiation in response to vaccination.

    Valentin studied Biology at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich and obtained his Master’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology with a specialization in immunology and virology. During his Master’s thesis at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, he examined extracellular vesicles of the tropical parasite Entamoeba histolytica and their immunomodulatory and sex-specific effects on primary neutrophils.

    Valentin Bärreiter has been part of Prof. Addo’s team since 2023 and is a member of the CRC1648 Graduate School.

    Stefanie Biejansky

    Stefanie Biejansky is a third-year medical student at the University of Hamburg.

    Her thesis entails studies on CD8+ t-cell epitopes and their characterization after MERS vaccination.

    Stefanie Biejansky is a scholarship holder of the Deutsches Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (DZIF) MD program. She has been working at UKE’s Intensive Care Clinic as part of the student team since 2022.

    She joined the IIRVD in October 2024 to work on her MD thesis.

    Ranya Dafi

    Ranya Dafi is a medical student at the University of Hamburg and has been doing her MD thesis at the IIRVD since 2024.

    In her thesis, she is studying the behavior of T cells in tonsil immune organoid systems exposed to different respiratory virus vaccine candidates.

    Ranya is a scholarship holder of the Heinrich Boell Foundation and an active member of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA), where she is involved in the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace.

    Luis Hartmann

    Luis Hartmann

    Luis Hartmann is a third-year medical student at the Technical University of Dresden.

    Since October 2025, he has been pursuing his MD at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Vaccine Development, in the group "Molecular Virology of Emerging Viruses" led by Toni Luise Meister. His doctoral research focuses on investigating the antiviral efficacy of various nucleoside analogs against yellow fever virus in cell culture models.

    He is a scholarship holder within the integrated Research Training Group (iRTG) program of CRC 1648.

    Natalie Nestel, M.Sc.

    Natalie Nestel is a PhD student at the IIRVD.

    Natalie Nestel holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology and a Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. During her Master’s thesis at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, she investigated the tumour microenvironment of immunotherapeutically treated hepatocellular carcinoma.

    At the IIRVD, Natalie researches the humoral immune response to viral vector vaccines against emerging and re-emerging viruses such as MERS-CoV and Ebola virus. She applies systems serology to study non-neutralising, Fc-mediated antibody functions.

    Natalie joined Prof. Addo’s team in 2024 and is funded through the DFG CRC1648 "Emerging Viruses", where she is also a member of the integrated Research Training Group (iRTG).

    Louisa E. Neumann, M. Sc.

    Louisa Neumann is a PhD student at the IIRVD.

    Louisa initially worked as a healthcare and nursing professional on a cardiology and electrophysiology ward before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Kiel (CAU). She completed her master’s degree in molecular life sciences at the University of Hamburg. During her master’s thesis at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, she compared the autoantibody repertoire in children exposed to malaria with that of patients with autoimmune diseases.

    In her doctoral research, Louisa is investigating the pregnancy-induced immunological adaptations in pregnant women that occur following vaccinations and infections, such as those resulting from influenza or RSV vaccination. To this end, she analyzes both the humoral and cellular immune responses.

    Since the beginning of 2026, Louisa has been part of Prof. Addo’s IIRVD team and is funded by CRC 1713 Maternal Immune Activation. She is also a member of the PREPARE Graduate School, which is integrated into the CRC1713.

    Anna-Lena Rupp, M.Sc.

    Anna-Lena Rupp is a PhD student in natural sciences at the IIRVD.

    Anna-Lena Rupp is a PhD candidate in natural sciences at the IIRVD. She studied Human Biology at Philipps University Marburg with a specialization in infection biology. During her Master’s thesis at the Institute of Virology in Marburg, she investigated the expression of human proteases in primary nasal epithelial cells in the context of influenza virus activation.

    In her doctoral research, Anna-Lena focuses on the liver tropism of the Mpox virus and the molecular mechanisms of virus–host interactions, with particular emphasis on the innate immune response and autophagy.

    Since April 2025, she has been a member of Toni Luise Meister’s junior research group at the IIRVD. Anna-Lena is also part of the CRC1648 integrated Research Training Group (iRTG) as a PhD student within the associated project AP01 .

    M Saleh Yunus, M.Sc.

    M Saleh Yunus is a joint PhD student at the IIRVD, UKE, and the Research Group of Helminth Immunology, BNITM.

    M Saleh Yunus completed his Pharmacy education at the University of Dhaka before serving as a faculty at the East West University in Bangladesh. He then did an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Vaccinology in France, Spain and Belgium. His master thesis at the Laboratory of Microbiology, Parasitology and Hygiene, University of Antwerp, focused on the humoral response against RSV infection, where he later continued as a research associate, before becoming part of the team of Prof. Addo since April 2023.

    His PhD work focuses on the efficacy of influenza vaccine in presence of a helminth infection.

    Maximilian Winter

    Maximilian Winter

    Maximilian Winter is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Hamburg. As part of his MD thesis, he is characterizing the vaccine-induced T-cell immune response specific to MERS-CoV Spike and MVA epitopes.

    Prior to his medical studies, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Biosciences from Heidelberg University, where he investigated the growth-inhibitory activity of vaccine-induced full-length Merozoite Surface Protein 1 antibodies in his bachelor’s thesis.

    He joined the Institute of Infection Research and Vaccine Development (IIRVD) in October 2025 and is funded by a scholarship from the CRC1648 Integrated Research Training Group .

    Monika Friedrich, M.Sc.

    Monika Friedrich works as a technical assistant (senior) in the laboratory of the IIRVD. The main tasks include organization, processing of the samples for the vaccine studies, sample shipping and process optimization, as well as device responsibilities.

    After training as a state-certified biological technical assistant, Monika Friedrich studied biology at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel (B.Sc.) and the University of Hamburg (M.Sc.). At the SH University Hospital in Lübeck, she was part of the Department of Dermatology in the group of Prof. Dr. Hartmann (University Hospital Basel) and assisted with questions on the role of mast cells in autoimmune diseases.

    Monika Friedrich has been part of Prof. Addo's team since 2019.

    My Linh Ly, M.Sc.

    My Linh Ly works as a technical assistant and lab manager.

    Her main tasks include organization, SOPs, biosafety, hygiene and operational procedures, sample processing for vaccine studies, process optimization, implementation of software solutions, and equipment responsibilities.

    After training as a medical-technical assistant at the MHH, she worked as a functional assistant in pneumology/somnology in Frankfurt a.M. and later in internal medicine as a study nurse in various phase II - III studies. She then worked in surgical research at the University Hospital in Regensburg where she worked with mesenchymal stem cell therapies before and after transplantation.

    My Linh Ly has been part of Prof. Addo's team since 2015.

    Lukas Daniel Sandoval Flores, B.Sc.

    Lukas Daniel Sandoval Flores is a technical assistant in the laboratory and has been supporting Prof. Addo's team since 2024.

    After training as a state-certified biological-technical assistant, he completed his bachelor's degree in biology at the University of Hamburg. He previously worked at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in the Institute of Osteology and Biomechanics, where he was involved in research into the molecular mechanisms of childhood skeletal diseases under the direction of Prof. Dr. Pohl.

    His tasks at the IIRVD include the planning, coordination and implementation of cell biological, molecular biological and biochemical experiments, technical documentation and the computer-aided and statistical analysis of research results.

    Romy Fischer

    Romy Fischer has been doing an Voluntary Social Year in Science (FSJW) at the Institute for Infection Research and Vaccine Development and the Collaborative Research Center 1648 "Emerging Viruses" since September 2025.

    As part of her FSJW, she gains insights into laboratory work and supports the research activities of the team. Before starting her FSJW, she completed her high school diploma (Abitur) in July 2025.

    Due to her interest in research and medicine, she decided to pursue an FSJ in science. She aims to pursue a professional career in this field in the long term.


  • MAscha Binder

    Prof. Dr. med. Mascha Binder

    Mascha Binder is a German oncologist, hematologist and palliative care physician.
    She studied medicine in Würzburg, Freiburg and Rome with training periods in France, Australia, Togo and the USA.

    In 2014, she was appointed to the W2 professorship for Immunological Cancer Research and Therapy at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. In 2018, she accepted an appointment at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, where she headed the University Clinic for Hematology and Oncology until 2023. Since 2023, she has been Professor and Chief Physician for Medical Oncology at the University Hospital Basel.

    Her research focuses on the field of cancer immunotherapy. She is active in various research networks and leads a number of clinical studies with this focus. She has also worked on other aspects of adaptive immunity, e.g. in the field of autoimmunity and infection biology, in her role as a visiting scientist at the IIRVD.

    Annette Hennings

    Dr. med. Annette Hennings

    Annette Hennigs is the Physician of the Infectiology Section at Albertinen Hospital in Hamburg. At IIRVD, she continues to be actively involved in clinical studies after many years of work in infectiology at the University Hospital, for example within the University Medicine Network (NUM).

    Annette Hennigs is a specialist in Internal Medicine and Infectiology. In addition to her clinical work and research, she is also highly engaged in international teaching projects, including an ERASMUS+ consortium project (IDEALiter).

    She studied Human Medicine in Hamburg and earned her doctorate in Human Genetics. She is a member of the advisory board of the German Society for Infectiology (DGI) and is particularly committed to improving communication of relevant infectiology and health policy topics via social media. Furthermore, she is co-host of the Hamburg podcast “Infektiopod,” supported by the DGI, the German Center for Infection Research, and the Academy for Infectious Medicine.

    Dr. med. Till Koch

    Dr. med. Till Koch is a senior physician in Infectious Diseases and head of the Antibiotic Stewardship (ABS) team at Klinikum Itzehoe.

    He completed his medical studies in Kiel in 2012, where he also earned his doctorate on indirect antibody effects in hemodialysis patients. From 2015 to 2024, he worked at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and, as part of a DZIF Clinical Leave Fellowship from the DZIF Academy, joined the research group of Prof. Addo. As a postdoctoral researcher, he played a key role in the development of the MVA-MERS-S vaccine; for the Lancet Infectious Diseases publication, he received the Meta Alexander Award for Clinical Infectious Disease Research from the German Society for Infectious Diseases (DGI) in 2020.

    His clinical and research interests include clinical infectious diseases, antibiotic stewardship, high-consequence pathogens, and science communication.

    Since 2024, he has been establishing a dedicated infectious diseases unit at Klinikum Itzehoe. Its core is a 19-bed infectious diseases ward, including a non-compliance area for tuberculosis therapy. Till Koch has already implemented an infectious diseases consult service, an ABS team, and an endocarditis board, and he has initiated the first scientific projects, which will be further expanded in association with the IIRVD in the future.

    Christoph Lange is a German pulmonologist and specialist in infectious diseases. He studied biology in Kiel and medicine in Witten-Herdecke and completed parts of his clinical training in South Africa and the USA.

    In 2014, he received a W3 professorship in Respiratory Medicine & International Health at the University of Lübeck and has since headed the Clinical Tuberculosis Unit at the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) at the Hamburg-Lübeck-Borstel-Riems site. Since 2018, he has been Medical Director of the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center.

    Christoph Lange is a visiting scientist at UKE, visiting professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX (USA) and at the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chisinau (R. Moldova).

    His research focuses on tuberculosis and diseases caused by other mycobacteria. He is the clinical leader of the EU-IMI project UNITE4TB (https://www.unite4tb.org/), a large multinational clinical trial platform to evaluate new drugs against tuberculosis in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. Currently, he serves the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases as Secretary General.

    Stefan Schmiedel

    Dr. med. Stefan Schmiedel

    Stefan Schmiedel pursued his studies in medicine at the universities of Frankfurt and Berlin. He subsequently undertook further training in general medicine and internal medicine before relocating to the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg in 1999, the Tamale Teaching Hospital in Tamale, Ghana in 2001, and finally the UKE in 2007.

    At the UKE he is responsible for the clinical care of patients with infectious and tropical diseases at the I. Medical Clinic & Polyclinic and the Infectious Diseases Outpatient Center. He is authorized to provide further training in internal medicine, infectiology and tropical medicine and is a specialist assessor for these specialties at the Hamburg Medical Association. He also has a particular interest in teaching and clinical training in the field of infectiology and tropical medicine.
    For many years, he has also led clinical trials on new vaccines and on therapy and diagnostics for infectious diseases as an investigator.
