Our focus is on translational research in the field of infectious diseases, particularly on the development, clinical testing, and optimization of vaccines and antimicrobial therapies—primarily, but not exclusively, against “emerging infections.” We take an interdisciplinary approach and collaborate closely with various departments at the UKE, as well as with national and international research institutions and partners. In doing so, we serve as a key interface between patients, study participants, physicians, and researchers at publicly funded institutions and in the private sector.
Research Focus Areas
- Emerging infections: Clinical research on newly emerging or re-emerging pathogens, with a particular focus on their clinical relevance, transmission dynamics, and therapeutic approaches.
- Clinical drug research: Conducting Phase I through Phase IV studies (interventional and observational studies) on novel vaccine candidates and antimicrobial therapies, including those targeting influenza, COVID-19, RSV, and other bacterial and viral pathogens.
- Surveillance of Infectious Diseases: Conducting large-scale cohort studies for the systematic recording and analysis of major infectious diseases in various population groups.
- Basic Immunological Research: Analyzing immunological markers and immune responses in the context of infectious diseases and vaccines, with particular attention to gender-specific differences and immunocompromised populations.
