Competencies for common cancers consolidated in organ-specific cancer centers
The Hubertus Wald Tumor Center – University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCC Hamburg) was established as an organizational unit and network to simplify access to all cancer-related services and resources at the UKE.
For the most common types of cancer, there are organ-specific cancer centers that focus on a particular group of cancers and bring together the interdisciplinary specialties required for treatment. The comprehensive care of cancer patients is coordinated by the Oncology Center as the overarching structure.
We voluntarily submit our organ-specific cancer centers and the Oncology Center to an external annual review by Onkozert. In doing so, we adhere to the strict standards of internationally recognized certifying bodies such as the

Sarcomas are malignant tumors of the soft tissues—that is, connective and supporting tissues—as well as the peripheral nerves and bones. They can develop almost anywhere in the body in more than 50 different subtypes but are overall very rare.
Because of this highly specialized disease profile, accurate diagnosis and close interdisciplinary collaboration in centers with sufficient experience are essential for successful treatment. For this purpose, the Sarcoma Center Hamburg was founded in 2012 and is now one of the largest sarcoma centers in Germany.

Most male germ cell tumors (GCTs) are diagnosed at an early stage, meaning they are confined to the testicles, and are highly curable. Even in advanced stages, when the disease has spread to lymph nodes or other organs, there are good chances of cure if stage-appropriate, multimodal treatment strategies are followed.
The Testicular Cancer Center is not only nationally recognized for testicular tumor treatment but also serves as a designated second-opinion center. As a Testicular Cancer Center, it is part of the European Reference Network (ERN) for rare adult tumors (EURACAN).

Colon cancer is the second most common type of cancer in Germany, with approximately 70,000 new cases diagnosed each year. When detected early and treated with a therapy tailored to the individual patient, the chances of a cure today are good.
Suspicion of a tumor usually arises during a routine test for occult (not visible to the naked eye) blood in the stool at a primary care physician’s office. For further evaluation, a colonoscopy is performed by a specialist in gastrointestinal diseases (gastroenterologist). If an abnormality is found, tissue samples are taken during the examination and analyzed in pathology for cancer cells.
