Welcome to the Institute of Cellular and Integrative Physiology

Thank you for your interest in our research and teaching activities!

The institute’s research activities are focused on the physiology of ion channels and transporters. The prime areas of interest are voltage-gated potassium and sodium channels as well as epithelial sodium channels and modulators. We simulate and analyze pathophysiological relationships, including cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac insufficiency, atrophy and hypertrophy, as well as epilepsy and the role of kidneys in high blood pressure.

Our research activities extend from the functional and regulatory mechanisms of the atomic and molecular structure to the consequences of the dysfunction of these proteins for the whole organism.

As a member of the Center for Experimental Medicine we collaborate with other member institutes of the Center such as the ZMNH, the University Heart Center (UHZ) and the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK).

The next generation will also need medical-scientific expertise – to this end we teach undergraduates and PhD students of human medicine, dentistry, pharmacology and the natural sciences.
