Our Department's History

In the year 1978 the Institute for Mathematics and Data Processing (IMDM) was founded with the appointment of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Berger for "Mathematics in Medicine" and Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Höhne for "Medical Informatics".

At the beginning of 2003, the Institute of Mathematics in Medicine was converted into an independent Institute for Medical Biometry and Epidemiology (IMBE), which became a part of the newly established Center for Experimental Medicine.

Prof. Dr. Karl Wegscheider was director of the institute from 2007 to 2016. Since May 2016 he has been working as a senior professor at the institute.

In July 2014 a new chair for epidemiology has been established at the IMBE. Prof. Dr. Heiko Becher accepted the invitation of UKE to become Professor of Epidemiology on July 1, 2014 and took over as head of the unit of epidemiology at IMBE. He is director of the institute since April 2016.

Prof. Dr. Geraldine Rauch was deputy head of the institute and head of the unit of medical biometry from January 2017 to June 2017.

Prof. Dr. Antonia Zapf is deputy head of the institute and head of the unit of medical biometry since April 2018.
