Our Department's History

With the appointment of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Berger for "Mathematics in Medicine" and Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Höhne for "Medical Informatics" in the year 1978, the present Institute the then still known as IMDM (Institute for Mathematics and Data Analysis in Medicine) was founded.

At the beginning of 2003 with the restructuring of UKE, Department of Mathematics in Medicine was converted into an independent Institute for Medical Biometry and Epidemiology (IMBE), which became a part of the newly established Center for Experimental Medicine.

Prof. Dr. Karl Wegscheider was Director of the institute from 2007 to April 2016. Since May 2016 he has been working as a senior professor at the institute.

Prof. Dr. Heiko Becher accepted the invitation of UKE to become professor of Epidemiology on July 1, 2014 and took over as head of the Unit of Epidemiology at IMBE. He is continuing as director of the institute since April 2016.
