It is important to us that our patients not only receive the best possible care, but are also fully informed. To this end, you will find comprehensive information about our treatment and counseling services on the following pages.
As a maximum care provider, we offer the entire range of treatment options for patients with cancer. Modern tumor therapy consists of five pillars: surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, biologicals/immunotherapy, and supportive therapy.
Therapy-accompanying, so-called supportive services complement tumor therapy. They help to alleviate symptoms of the disease and therapy-related side effects and improve quality of life.
Aftercare is an equally important part of our treatment services. Once treatment and rehabilitation are complete, we provide comprehensive support to patients at UCC Hamburg as they transition back to everyday life.
Oncology is an interdisciplinary field. This means that the diagnosis and treatment of cancer always involves collaboration between many different disciplines. The Hubertus Wald Tumor Center – University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCC Hamburg) is the organizational unit for all clinics and institutes at the UKE involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of tumor diseases, thus combining all areas of oncology in the inpatient and outpatient sectors. This enables interdisciplinary treatment from the outset.
Close cooperation between many medical departments is necessary to provide comprehensive care. This is bundled in interdisciplinary consultations, tumor boards, and organ cancer centers. The entire care of cancer patients is coordinated by the Oncology Center as the overarching structure and is regularly certified according to the criteria of the German Cancer Society.
People often feel uncertain about where to turn when they are newly diagnosed with cancer. The UCC Hamburg's central contact point provides an initial point of contact, offering various interdisciplinary consultation hours. You will typically receive an appointment for an initial consultation within a few days. We also offer a range of consultation hours for topics related to familial cancer, follow-up care, and second opinions.
In addition to the central entry point at UCC Hamburg, the oncology outpatient clinic in Building East 24 on the UKE campus offers diagnostic measures, treatment, and associated aftercare concepts for cancer patients. In addition to the registration and waiting area, there are six treatment rooms with 28 therapy places and a further six beds for outpatient therapy.
For all patients with cancer, individual treatment strategies are discussed and recommended with the disciplines involved at the time of diagnosis and during the course of therapy, based on the patient's medical history and the findings collected. This exchange takes place in the tumor board.
The recommendations are based on standardized treatment guidelines that are developed and regularly updated for each tumor type by interdisciplinary working groups (the “task forces”) at the UCC Hamburg. This is also where decisions are made as to whether treatment within the framework of a modern clinical study is an option.
The University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCC Hamburg) was founded as an organizational unit, a so-called competence network, to simplify access to all cancer-related topics at the UKE and beyond.
For common types of cancer, there are organ cancer centers that focus on a specific area of cancer and bring together the interdisciplinary fields required for treatment. These are assessed in annual audits conducted by Onkozert on a voluntary basis to ensure excellent treatment standards and compliance with strict international treatment standards.
Every person is different—down to the smallest cells, including tumor cells. The term “personalized therapy” is now encountered in numerous fields, including cancer treatment. The Center for Personalized Medicine – Oncology (ZPM-Oncology), part of the University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCC Hamburg), has set itself the task of further developing and testing new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in clinical application. Therapeutic efficacy is the top priority; at the same time, the aim is to minimize side effects in order to ensure optimal treatment for our patients.
Dealing with a cancer diagnosis is as individual as the people affected themselves. Some want to gather as much information as possible, while others need distance, space, and time to focus on themselves first.
