Welcome to the Department of Urology

Our department strives to deliver patient-oriented, modern therapy of the highest medical standards. The main focus is on reconstructive urology, embracing the whole spectrum of urinary tract surgery, continence restoration procedures (including the implantation of an artificial sphincter muscle or a band system), surgical correction of congenital and acquired penis deviation and prosthetic implants in cases of erectile dysfunction, as well as urologic oncology (cancer of the bladder, kidney, adrenal glands, testes and penis). We practice the full spectrum of open and minimally invasive surgical procedures (incl. use of the high-tech DaVinci robot system) and all forms of urinary diversion procedures. Medication tumor therapy is offered by our department, working in collaboration with the Oncologic Clinic and the UCCH. Together with the Martini Clinic we perform the largest number of radical prostate surgical procedures for prostate cancer in Europe. Overall, due to the development of urologic oncology, microsurgical techniques, operating microscopes and the DaVinci robot system, we are able to achieve good, markedly above-average results in terms of oncologic outcomes and restoration of function. We play a lead role in minimally invasive surgery in North Germany, especially in holmium laser surgery on enlarged prostate glands and laparoscopic examinations of kidneys. The joined forces of the pediatric urology departments of Altona Children’s Hospital and the UKE make us one of Germany’s leading centers of pediatric urology. We are also a certified training center of the ESUP (European Association of Pediatric Urology). This collaborative approach is also evident in our cooperation with the Departments for General Surgery and Gynecology and it makes us a competent partner for the Pelvic Floor Center.

Prof. Dr. M. Fisch heads the team in the Urological Department, which includes a further 7 consultants and 27 research assistants, of whom 8 are specialist physicians.
