As a child, when I was asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I would respond: a saint. Then I lost faith. As a child, I didn't know what being a scientist meant. All I knew was that I had questions.

Science. The tension between the known and the unknown. Knowing that you don't know.

Was gefällt Ihnen an der Arbeit als Professorin?

The extraordinary opportunity to transmit passion for knowledge: leading students to uncover a gap, witnessing their hesitation, and then watching them making the leap.

Was gefällt Ihnen nicht ganz so gut an Ihrer Arbeit?

I enjoy many aspects of academia, but I sometimes feel that it moves too slowly.

Gab es kritische Phasen im Laufe Ihrer Karriere, und wie sind Sie damit umgegangen?

Yes, there were critical phases in my career. These included transitioning between disciplines—from philosophy to cognitive science and then to neuroscience—changing institutions, moving my laboratory to a new country. Critical phases require critical decisions and this is how I dealt with them.

Welches sind die Schwerpunkte Ihrer Forschung?

We study how information is encoded, read, and transmitted in the way we move.

Muss man sich, Ihrer Meinung nach schon in einer sehr frühen Karrierephase dafür entscheiden, den Weg zur Professur einzuschlagen?

Not sure.

No balance - it's all about science. And it feels good.
