Travel Information - Getting around in Hamburg

In and around the city of Hamburg

To reach the campus of the University Medical Center, you can use Hamburg’s bike lanes, the city's extensive public transport network ( HVV ) or you can use your own or a rental car. Discover useful information and tips about your preferred mode of transport below.

Parking on Campus – Garage underneath the main building (O10)

Parking in the garage on Campus costs 3 € per hour with a maximum of 30 € per day. The entrance to the garage is at the roundabout at the main entrance.
Limited street parking (€€) is available around the campus – but not allowed in residential areas nearby (signposted “Bewohner mit Parkausweis Nr. X”).

By bicycle

Hamburg is a bike-friendly city. ​For short trips around the city or to the campus, a rental bike is ideal (10 cents per minute, max. 9 € per day). There are 120 service points around the city, usually at busy train stations – but the UKE has a service point at the main entrance, too.

By bus or train or ferry

Hamburg has a dense public transportation network . Buses, trains and ferries are available to take you to many different parts of the city. There are direct bus links to various other towns and cities as well. Plan your route using the HVV.

Note that there are no ticket machines in buses or trains anymore. There are ticket machines in train stations, but not at every bus stop. In case you want to use public transport, it may be advisable to download the HVV App in the App store. The HVV App is available in English, please change the language setting. Advantage: tickets cost less when you use the HVV App .

Coming from abroad - how to get to Hamburg

By air - Hamburg Airport (Helmut-Schmidt-Airport)

The S1 Train takes you to Hamburg Central Station in 25 minutes.

By train

Hamburg is easy to reach by train. The German Railway ( DB Deutsche Bahn ) serves three train stations in Hamburg: Central Station, Dammtor Station and Hamburg-Altona.

You can also travel to Hamburg with international Bus Lines, such as Flixbus.

How to get to UKE

Travelling from the Central Station to the UKE Campus

  • Take Blue Subway Line 1 (U-Bahnlinie U1) direction Garstedt/Norderstedt to station “Kellinghusenstraße”. Outside of the station, take bus no. 25 direction Altona to the UKE:
  • Or take bus no. 5 to bus stop “Gärtnerstraße” and then switch to bus no. 20 or 25 and get off at “Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf”

Both routes about 25 minutes
