During and after cancer therapy, nutrition plays a central role: it strengthens the body, alleviates side effects, and supports the success of treatment. Professional nutritional counseling can provide valuable assistance in this regard.
The right nutrition for cancer is as individual as the disease itself. It is a key component in providing the best possible support for patients. Current studies show that—depending on the type of cancer—up to 70 percent of patients are already malnourished at the time of diagnosis. Malnutrition can negatively affect the course and success of treatment.
Individual nutritional counseling helps prevent malnutrition or improve an existing deficiency. It can also alleviate therapy-related side effects and enhance quality of life.
At UCC Hamburg, nutritional counseling takes into account each patient’s personal eating habits and life circumstances. The focus is on maintaining a healthy weight and easing side effects such as loss of appetite, changes in taste, digestive issues, or nausea. Based on individual preferences, patients receive practical, everyday recommendations to improve their nutrition and support their well-being as effectively as possible.
Nutrition continues to play an important role during follow-up care. It can help reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and alleviate persistent side effects, such as fatigue or digestive issues. Even when no symptoms are present, nutritional counseling is highly beneficial—for example, to maintain a healthy body weight or support heart health.
Our counseling is based on current scientific recommendations, including the S3 Guideline “Nutrition and Nutritional Medicine in Oncology,” the guidelines of the German Society for Nutritional Medicine (DGEM), the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), and relevant guidelines on cardiovascular and oncological risk factors.
