The palliative care consultation clinic provides treatment and counseling for patients with incurable diseases and their families regarding symptoms and issues that may arise on physical, psychological, social, and/or existential levels related to incurable illnesses.
The treatment of the underlying disease is the responsibility of the specialist physicians in the respective medical departments.
The palliative care consultation clinic operates in addition to standard treatment, with the goal of alleviating symptoms and providing advice on issues and concerns that may arise from an incurable illness—even under appropriate, disease-specific therapy.
The palliative care consultation clinic is available from the first diagnosis of an incurable illness and can be accessed at any time throughout the course of the disease.
Each patient can best assess for themselves whether there is a need for additional palliative counseling and treatment: This need usually arises when symptoms, problems, or questions related to the incurable disease and what may lie ahead in its course have not been adequately addressed or answered. An important exception, however, are any questions that directly concern the treatment of the disease itself, such as questions about potential chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery and their side effects.
