What are the determinants of the antiviral immune response resulting in immunopathology versus protective immunity?
There is a continuous spectrum of host responses to viral infection, mounted by infected cells directly, followed by the innate cellular immunity, leading up to the adaptive immune response. By leveraging the broad expertise at the
University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE)
and partners in studying this spectrum, we will identify determinants and mechanisms of disease that are relevant to specific emerging viruses. We will also study commonalities in immune patterns relevant to potential future emerging viruses. We will investigate the critical components of the immune system using the most advanced techniques in the field of immunology, including single-cell analyzes, to study the interplay between innate and adaptive immune cells and correlate these analyzes with clinical data.
