The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1648 "Emerging Viruses: Pathogenesis, Structure, Immunity" investigates emerging viruses – viruses that were previously unknown or that appear for the first time in a specific region or among humans. Such pathogens can have significant impacts on health, as we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The central hypothesis of this CRC is that an in-depth understanding of pathogenesis, structural and functional aspects of virus-host interactions, and immunity to specific emerging viral infections will allow for the strategic development of widely applicable and generalizable preventive or therapeutic strategies targeting both virus and host.
The Eighth Scientific Afternoon of the CRC1648 will take place on October 15, 2025, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the UKE.

The 2nd CRC 1648 Symposium on "The Science of Emerging Viruses: Chances and Challenges" will take place on June 3–4, 2026, at the Erika-Haus, UKE Hamburg.
The event brings together experts from science, politics, society, and media, in cooperation with the
