Harvard Meets UKE 2026: International Expertise for Treatment Decisions in Prostate Cancer

How can patient-centered treatment decisions be made in cases of advanced prostate cancer? This question was the focus of the “Harvard meets UKE” event, where renowned experts from Boston and Hamburg discussed the latest findings on shared decision-making and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).

Actively involving patients in treatment decisions is becoming increasingly important in light of the ever-expanding range of treatment options in oncology, and is a recurring topic of discussion in various contexts. Against this backdrop, the event “Harvard meets UKE – Academic Research Across the Atlantic Ocean,” held on June 18, 2026, brought together international and national experts at the Martini Clinic at the UKE.
The focus was on advanced prostate cancer and the question of how shared decision-making and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can improve care. Prof. Dr. Gunhild von Amsberg, Professor of Uro-Oncology specializing in systemic therapy for prostate cancer at the UCC Hamburg and the Martini Clinic, kicked off the event with an overview of current treatment options and their significance for clinical decision-making.

A particular highlight was the presentation by Prof. Alicia Morgans, MD, MPH, from Harvard Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. She presented the current state of scientific research on PROMs and shared decision-making and explained how patient-reported outcomes support communication between healthcare providers and patients and enable care that is more closely aligned with patients’ needs.

Prof. Dr. Isabelle Scholl from the Institute and Outpatient Clinic for Medical Psychology at the UKE then presented practical approaches for structured conversations and realistic expectation management in clinical care. Prof. Scholl and Prof. Morgans share a close research collaboration; they have previously conducted research and published papers on shared decision-making in everyday therapy. The event concluded with a joint discussion in which challenges and potential solutions for implementing shared decision-making in everyday clinical practice were explored using specific case examples.
The event and the get-together that followed gave participants the opportunity to combine the latest scientific findings with practical experience and to further strengthen professional exchange across the Atlantic on patient-centered care models.
