The aim of the “S.O.O.S. – Second Opinion Oncology Service” project is to establish a nationwide, quality-assured second opinion network for cancer patients.
The UCC Hamburg is the main applicant for the project “S.O.O.S. – Second Opinion Oncology Service,” which is being carried out in collaboration with the Comprehensive Cancer Centers (CCC) funded by German Cancer Aid. The aim of the project is to establish a nationwide, quality-assured second opinion network for cancer patients. A total of eight CCC locations are involved, pooling their expertise in oncology, IT, health services research, and clinical practice. The focus is on developing a standardized, secure, and practical process for obtaining a second medical opinion in cases of cancer.
The work is divided into four sub-goals:
Close cooperation between the participating sites is intended to create a transferable model that will enable all cancer patients in Germany to access qualified second opinions. In a second phase of the project, the plan is to extend the developed concept to all CCC sites and evaluate its effectiveness. In the long term, the second opinion service is to be integrated into standard care in order to improve oncological care in the long term.
