Better together – as a network
The Hubertus Wald Tumor Center – University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCC Hamburg) brings together all clinics and institutes involved in diagnostics, therapy, and research within the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and works with numerous partners in healthcare, science, and self-help in and around Hamburg.
Following an extensive review by international experts, German Cancer Aid (DKH) has once again designated UCC Hamburg as a Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) for 2024, as it did in 2009, 2013, 2016, and 2020.
This is an honor that is bestowed on very few centers in Germany and also comes with financial support for the further development of our treatment and research activities.
The aim of the funding provided by German Cancer Aid is to fundamentally improve the care of cancer patients in Germany. Criteria for selecting the UCC Hamburg as a center of excellence included the establishment of a central point of contact for cancer patients in interdisciplinary oncological care for all tumor diseases, the treatment of patients in innovative clinical trials, the holding of interdisciplinary conferences (tumor boards), the development and implementation of treatment pathways, close integration of research and patient treatment, structured cooperation with local physicians and clinics, and cooperation with patient representatives and self-help groups.
The German Cancer Aid's leading oncology centers in Germany work together in working groups across the country to significantly shape and improve cancer medicine in Germany.
In addition, Prof. Dr. Carsten Bokemeyer is Director and Spokesperson of the Hubertus Wald Tumor Center at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UCC Hamburg) and Director of the II. Medical Clinic and Polyclinic for Oncology and Hematology, as well as Spokesperson for the Germany-wide CCC Network of Oncology Centers of Excellence. A current overview of all centers is available on the CCC network website.
Together we are better. Interdisciplinary cooperation is important to us, not only at the UKE, but also beyond the city limits. We are a competence network consisting of an association of centers, clinics, oncology practices, self-help groups, research partners, and other partner institutions, working together to bring the idea of a “Comprehensive Cancer Center” from German Cancer Aid to life.
To ensure successful cooperation, we provide contact persons, guidelines, aftercare plans, and task forces in the login area for cooperation partners.
The various levels and structures at the Hubertus Wald Tumor Center – University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCC Hamburg) work closely together at various levels:
In addition to a coordinating core unit, which is responsible for defining and implementing central tasks and also serves as a central point of contact for all tumor patients, our competence network thrives on the extremely cooperative collaboration of all clinics and institutes involved in cancer medicine and research at the UKE.
This spirit of cooperation is also shared by our partners in the Hamburg metropolitan region. In addition to joint studies and research meetings, our partners exchange information about our shared patients through our tumor boards and the joint development of patient guidelines (pathways).
This benefits all sides: short distances for patients, simple standardized procedures for referring physicians, and clear structures for treating physicians. In addition to providing excellent cancer treatment according to the highest international standards and developing new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, we have made it our mission to support patients, their families, physicians, and practitioners with a wide range of special assistance and counseling services.
Throughout his life, Hamburg patron and businessman Hubertus Wald used his fortune to promote art and medicine in the Hanseatic city. In 1993, he and his wife Renate Wald established the Hubertus Wald Foundation, which has since provided significant support and funding to numerous institutions in Hamburg. They also played a key role in supporting the establishment of the Tumor Center and remain a key partner to this day.
