Involvement & Engagement
At the University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCC Hamburg), great effort is made to enable patients and their caregivers to get involved. This can be through volunteer work, participation in events, or contributing to research projects.
At our leading oncology center, we distinguish between two perspectives on the involvement of patients and caregivers. On the “I” perspective, participation primarily contributes to personal development, for example through the use of Shared Decision Making when considering different treatment options for one’s own care journey. On the “We” perspective, patients and caregivers act on behalf of a broader group of affected individuals, representing their interests. They bring the group’s experiences into discussions on research projects, policy-making, committee work, and other areas.

Patient Involvement in Oncology means that patients and their caregivers are actively engaged in their treatment and in cancer research.
Areas of Patient Involvement
- In Care: Patients and physicians make joint decisions about diagnosis and treatment based on medical evidence, individual values, and patient preferences (Shared Decision Making).
- In Research: Patients and their caregivers contribute their perspectives to the development and evaluation of studies.
- In Policy: Patient representatives participate in ministry working groups to help shape and improve healthcare services.
Support Services
- Psycho-Oncology: Supports patients and caregivers in coping with the diagnosis, managing psychological stress, and improving quality of life.
- Patient Organizations and Support Groups: Offer opportunities for exchange and can provide valuable support.
- Peer Mentoring: Trained former cancer patients support current patients during the often challenging diagnosis and treatment phase by sharing their personal experiences.
