In Project Area A of CRC 1700, we will investigate the mechanisms of immune regulation that are intrinsic to the liver’s unique potential to induce immunological tolerance. We will furthermore decipher the molecular and spatial determinants of autoimmunity and autoaggression that eventually lead to the break of tolerance and the development of chronic diseases of the liver and biliary tract.
In Project Area B we will focus on the extrinsic determinants of immune regulation in the liver. For instance, we will determine the role of the mucosal surfaces in the intestinal and the biliary tract in shaping the hepatic immune response, including functional implications of disease-associated microbiota.
