Research Focus and Main research questions

The Research Group GermanVasc was founded in 2014 at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany. We are primarily active in the field of health services research and quality improvement using registries and health insurance claims data. GermanVasc is deeply involved and embedded in several national and international collaborations comprising the VASCUNET committee of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS), the International Consortium of Vascular Registries (ICVR), as well as the Medical Device Epidemiology Network (MDEpiNet). To date, we published more than 70 original contributions using routinely collected data from insurance claims or registries on vascular interventions (e.g., on pharmacological treatment, open-surgical and endovascular interventions, medical devices, sex-related differences in care, and predictive risk modelling).

Research Projects

Between 2015 and 2021, we conducted four interdependent research projects in the field of the treatment of patients with peripheral arterial disease (principal investigator: Christian-Alexander Behrendt). These projects comprised a multicenter registry to determine everyday clinical practice in 74 German vascular centres (PSI study), a multistage real-world study using both data from registries and routinely collected claims data (CORONA study), a prospective cohort study on the complementary care of patients with symptomatic peripheral arterial disease (IDOMENEO study), and a multiprofessional consortial study on predictive risk modelling and its implications for data protection and liability (RABATT study). Common aims of these efforts were the illumination of factors associated with quality of care, as well as the development of methods to predict favorable outcomes.

  • Methods

    Methods:

We use all methods of health services research comprising surveys, prospective and retrospective observational study design, complex methods on causal inference in big data, machine learning methods, risk modelling, weighting and matching, registry-based research, routinely collected data from electronic health records and administrative data.
