The International Research Training Group (IRTG) is a joint research and training programme that brings together outstanding early-career researchers in an international and interdisciplinary environment. Through the close collaboration between the Hamburg and Paris sites, the IRTG fosters scientific exchange, collaborative research, and international networking. At the core of the IRTG is the combination of excellent research and structured doctoral training. Doctoral researchers benefit from a tailored training programme that integrates scientific excellence, methodological diversity, and international mobility. Regular workshops, collaborative research projects, and extended research stays at the partner institutions promote continuous exchange across disciplines and national borders.
The scientific focus of the IRTG is to elucidate the role of subcellular microdomains in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding how spatially organized signaling complexes—especially cAMP-, cGMP-, and Ca²⁺-dependent signaling systems—regulate cardiac function under physiological and pathological conditions. By combining state-of-the-art imaging and biosensor technologies with human cell and tissue models, the consortium aims to uncover the mechanisms underlying disease-associated alterations in these microdomains and to identify novel therapeutic targets for heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias.
The IRTG is committed to preparing the next generation of researchers for the challenges of an increasingly interconnected scientific landscape. By combining interdisciplinary training with international collaboration and cutting-edge research, the programme equips doctoral researchers with the expertise and experience required for successful scientific careers. At the same time, it contributes to a deeper understanding of subcellular microdomains and their potential as targets for future cardiovascular therapies.
