Hemodynamic Monitoring and Management
Aim:
The overarching goal of our research is to optimize hemodynamic management and improve patient-centered outcomes in perioperative and intensive care medicine.

Research Projects
1. IMPROVE-multi trial:
In this 1,272-patient multicenter randomized trial funded by the German Research Foundation, we evaluate whether individualized versus routine perioperative blood pressure management during major abdominal surgery improves clinical outcomes in high-risk patients.
2. ASPIRE-85 trial:
In this 3,432-patient multicenter randomized trial funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, we investigate whether targeted intraoperative blood pressure management can reduce postoperative delirium in older patients with arterial hypertension having non-cardiac surgery.
3. PELICAN trial:
In this European multicenter randomized trial including 1,128 patients, we test the hypothesis that personalized intraoperative hemodynamic management targeting preoperative baseline cardiac index improves patient-centered outcomes in high-risk patients having major abdominal surgery.
4. DETECT II trial: In this 930-patient randomized trial, we investigate whether continuous finger-cuff – compared to intermittent oscillometric – arterial pressure monitoring reduces intraoperative hypotension in elective non-cardiac surgery patients.
5. HEARTS trial:
In this 730-patient trial, we test the hypothesis that personalized postoperative hemodynamic management increases the number of “days alive and out of hospital within 30 days after surgery” compared to routine hemodynamic management in patients treated in an advanced post-anesthesia care unit after major non-cardiac surgery.

- Innovative hemodynamic monitoring methods to measure blood pressure, blood flow, oxygen delivery, and microcirculatory perfusion in patients having major surgery, in patients treated in advanced post-anesthesia care units and on general wards after surgery, and in patients with circulatory shock treated in the intensive care unit.
