Childhood immunity critically depends on fetal immune development, a flexible and dynamic process occurring at various tissue sites throughout fetal life. Maternal factors support fetal immune growth under normal conditions.
However, the fetal immune system is highly adaptable and responds not only to developmental cues but also to adverse pregnancy conditions, triggering compensatory immune responses. These responses may lead to observable immunological disadvantages in children.
