In addition, we offer competent counseling and treatment for young people who can no longer control their use of computer and especially, internet. The offer is targeted at young people in the age group between 12 and 26 years, whose use of internet or computer has become so excessive, that it presents a problem for them and comes with negative consequences.

Treatment Approach

In the Outpatient Treatment Center for Drug- and Alcohol-Abusing Adolescents, Young Adults and their Families (DAA, Director: Prof. MD Rainer Thomasius) we treat young adults from 13 up to 26 years with problematic substance use (addiction, substance abuse, substance misuse). In the outpatient addiction therapy we take into account the personal, social and family-related consequences of substance abuse as well as additional mental disorders. The Outpatient Treatment Center for Drug- and Alcohol-Abusing Adolescents, Young Adults and their Families is an outpatient center of the shared psychiatric institute outpatient treatment center within in the Center for Psychosocial Medicine.

The therapeutic spectrum of our outpatient treatment is based on the biopsychosocial model of mental illness. It is organized along four ideal type phases: Diagnostics, diagnosis, addiction treatment, and, if necessary, treatment of additional mental illnesses (anxiety, depression, personality disorders, psychoses etc.). Booster sessions after finishing therapy are conducted in addition.

Our therapeutic approach includes school-transcending practices from individual therapy, group therapy, social therapy and family therapy. In addition, pharmacological treatments are conducted according to the individual diagnosis. If necessary, we initiate and prepare for further inpatient and outpatient treatment.

The treatment team of the outpatient treatment center consists of a physician for adult psychiatry and psychotherapy, a physician for psychiatry and psychotherapy for children and adolescents, a psychotherapist with university degree in psychology, a psychotherapist specialized on children and adolescents as well as a social education worker.

Provided the agreement of patients and their families, we conduct scientific research and evaluation for our treatment. This ensures a continuous review concerning the effectiveness of our therapy methods and their adjustment to current scientific standards.

Special offer for internet addiction: PC counselling and treatment

In recent years, the DAA-team has been working with young people that exhibit problematic computer and / or internet use. In a first counseling appointment we clarify the severity of the problematic computer or internet usage, if further treatment is in order and, if yes, what next steps should be taken. The costs for counseling and treatment are almost always borne by the respective health insurance.
A good treatment option is the group program "Joy for life instead of online flight!", which has been conducted at the DAA for the last three years and was developed by staff members. The program comprises eight weekly 90-minute-sessions. The program teaches a competent use of internet and PC, strengthens social competences and helps planning alternative leisure time activities The effectiveness of the program is currently being scientifically tested. In conducting the program, the DAA is supported by the non-profit organization "Hamburg helps Children" (German title: "Hamburg macht Kinder gesund").
