Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology

Medical Director: Prof. Dr. med. Jens Fiehler
Vice Medical Director: Dr. U. Grzyska
Head Medical Technician: B. Hilbrands
Managing Director: Jürgen Kupper

The Department

The Neuroradiology Department of the UKE was one of the first autonomous departments in Germany established in this field. We have a long tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration with all other radiological and neurological disciplines but also with the ophthalmology and ENT departments as well as the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department. The goal is to provide patients with the best possible treatment. We achieve this by utilizing professional, technological and instrument synergies. We can already look back on 30 years of experience with minimally invasive catheter procedures. Clinics
Opinions in neuroradiology are based mainly on imaging documents. We use them and supplemental clinical data to do written consultations mainly in cases of complex neuroradiological findings in order to provide recommendations for neuroradiological surgical procedures and second opinions.

Research

For many years we have taken part in the "stroke" and "glioma research" competence networks. These are German-wide networks formed by doctors, scientists, self-help groups and other organizations for exchange of information. We are participating in 24 multicenter magnetic resonance tomography-based studies. This has led, for example, to involvement of several of  our colleagues in the Executive Safety Board of the SPACE Study, which deals with the therapy of narrowing of the aorta.

Facts and figures

With more than 200 surgical procedures on aneurysms every year in cooperation with the Neurosurgery Department and Clinic we are one of the few German neurovascular centers that do these procedures regularly and can treat all types of aneurysm. In the Stroke Unit, which is open 24 hours 7 days a week, differential diagnosis of 1,000 stroke patients is possible annually. An interventional therapy for acute strokes (thrombolysis, thrombus extraction, angioplasty) is available at all times.

Department statistics (in 2008)

120 Aneurysms treated by platinum coil
210 Interventional procedures for aneurysms, angiomas, AV fistulas
4.800 CT studies
5.600 Magnetic resonance studies, partly as an emergency test and/or under anesthesia, for example, in children
450 Diagnostic angiographies, partly outpatient

Eleven doctors including 8 specialists and 3 with third-party funding work in our Department. One Study Nurse and 10 medical radiotechnicians ensure a smooth flow of the many tests performed.
