The Clinic and Policlinic for General and Interventional Cardiology treats patients suffering from heart and cardiovascular conditions. Along with its expertise in diagnostics, the clinic specializes in coronary conditions, treatment of cardiac insufficiency, defective heart valves, vascular dilation of the aorta (aorta aneurysms) and diagnostic and treatment of congenital heart problems and connective tissue conditions such as Marfan Syndrome.
The Clinic and Policlinic for General and Interventional Cardiology is one of the few clinics in Germany to perform mitral valve repairs, using a heart catheter when necessary. The UHC has treated more patients using the so-called "mitral clipping technique" than any other clinic in the world. Patients benefit from one of the select few outpatient practices for adult patients with congenital heart defects. There are estimated to be approximately 300,000 individuals in Germany with this type of heart defect; of these, 85% reach adulthood. Additionally, 100 patients with Marfan Syndrome and aorta defects are treated annually at the clinic.
