The Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery and Oncology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), chaired by Professor Rainald Knecht, M.D., Ph.D. is one of Europe’s leading facilities for the treatment of all diseases in the head and neck region. Each year we treat 3500 patients on an inpatient and 15000 on an outpatient basis.
Particular attention is paid to the state-of-the-art, outstanding multi- and interdisciplinary cancer therapy. Our Department functions as a superspecialised division of the University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCCH), a Comprehensive Cancer Center cooperating with fellow specialists from the Harvard Medical School, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the MD Anderson Cancer Center to provide our patients with a custom-tailored therapy according to the latest international treatment guidelines. Modern cancer therapy follows individual treatment approaches, taking the patient’s distinct assets as well as the individual tumour biology and molecular characteristics into account.
Our head and neck oncology team guides more than 600 patients each year through the full course of therapy. The entire spectrum of oncologic and reconstructive head and neck surgery is fully covered by our internationally trained, dedicated and experienced surgeons. Besides primary surgery, successful salvage surgery with functional free flap reconstruction after recurrence or following failed radio- or chemotherapy is of our special interest. Modern head and neck cancer care may include induction chemotherapy and chemoradiation, which often allows us to abandon surgical therapy.
Besides the malignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract, delicate surgery of the parotids and other salivary glands, thyroids and parathyroids gets another special emphasis in our treatment portfolio. State-of-the-art nerve monitoring during these procedures is the standard approach at our Department.
Extensive experience and modern techniques in the field of sinus and anterior skull base surgery applying functional endoscopic sinus surgery are also offered at our Department. The latest high definition imaging and intraoperative navigation tools are used to guarantee optimal results with minimal tissue damage in our operating theatres, enabling us to perform excellent and gentle surgical treatment.
Sophisticated middle ear and lateral skull base surgery including all procedures in the delicate field of Otology are provided by our Team, from ventilation tube insertions to demanding middle ear reconstructions and hearing aid implantation, including cochlear implants. Experienced, internationally trained surgeons, high-end equipment and thorough preoperative and postoperative care guarantee the optimal outcome for our patients.
