Dermatology and Venereology Department and Clinic

Medical Director: Prof. Dr. Ingrid Moll
Vice Medical Director: Dr. Wolfgang Kimmig
Managing Director: Dr. Michael Moormann
Director of Nursing: Alexander Baaß

The Department

Our Department specializes in the treatment of skin tumors and chronic inflammatory skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis and neurodermatitis.  We also offer comprehensive allergy diagnostics and treatment. We use modern laser therapies for unsightly spider veins or scars. Innovative wound dressings, ultrasonic cleaning and vacuum pumps find use in the therapy of chronic wounds. We are one of the few Departments in Germany to grow patients' own cells to heal wounds.

Clinics

Our Vein Clinic is well-known beyond Hamburg's borders. Besides classical vein stripping, we use modern treatment methods like endoluminal laser therapy or foam sclerotherapy. In our Aesthetic Clinic we improve the appearance of scars with peels or filler injections and correct wrinkles with botulin toxin, hyaluronic acid or collagen.

Research

Because one of our main research interests is wound healing, we developed in our department a patented model for testing new methods and medications for wound healing. Over the years this has enabled us to continuously improve transplantation of patients' own cells. Since last year we have been the only Dermatology Department in Germany with a special microscope enabling examination of specific molecules several layers deep in living skin. This will be used also for our other research interests, the study of skin tumors and the barrier function of the skin in diseases like eczema.

Facts and figures

In a recent survey of dermatologists in Northern Germany by the Hamburger Abendblatt our colleagues ranked the Dermatology Department of the UKE the best skin cancer department. In 2007, we performed our 5,000th vein surgery. Last year the colleagues in the Dermatology Department published 48 papers in renowned journals; three doctors completed work to qualify as professors. Over the past three years we were able to obtain over two million Euros in third-party funding.
