All areas of gynecology including gynecological oncology, surgical and non-surgical gynecology, urogynecology and endocrinology are represented in our Department by their own specialties. The Gynecology Department is additionally a national competence center for surgical and non-surgical gynecological oncology and also the leading breast and ovarian cancer center. We offer all types of gynecological surgery, minimally invasive or radical, with the highest standard of quality.
An interdisciplinary breast center has been set up at the UKE under the general management of the Gynecology Department that has been certified according to the strictest guidelines. Here women with breast cancer find all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures "under one roof". One of a kind in Northern Germany is also our Ovary Clinic where we can offer women with nonspecific or malignant diseases of the ovaries state-of-the-art diagnostics and targeted therapies.
Our clinical research deals with the mechanisms and processes leading to the spread and metastasis of tumor cells and the detection of metastasized tumor cells in the blood and bone marrow. We do research on the biological properties of tumors that can provide information for the prognosis and best individualized form of therapy for breast and gynecological cancers. Another main research interest is development and testing of new cancer drugs (clinical studies) for breast and ovarian cancer. In inoculation studies we are attempting to prevent cervical cancer before it occurs. Our research work is supported by the European Union and awarded national and international prizes every year.
In a survey of specialists in Northern German by the Hamburger Abendblatt our Department was ranked the best breast cancer center in the region. In our Department we achieve significantly longer survival and higher tumor removal rates in patients with advanced ovarian cancer than the average for all German gynecology departments. Twenty doctors with different specialties such as cancer, hormones and infertility work in the Gynecology Department. The twenty-four members of our nursing staff provide care for our patients.
