The Department

We use only state-of-the-art instruments for tests in our Department. All diagnostic tests are performed with digitalized methods. The focus in conventional radiology diagnostics is digital mammography, which uses less radiation due to a flat detector system. Computer tomography (CT) provides a distinct image of all body regions including the coronary vessels. We use magnetic resonance tomography primarily to obtain images of the heart, abdominal organs, joints, soft tissues and bones. Angiography, sonography and PET/CT complete the range of radiological services provided by our Department.

Clinics

In our Mammography Clinic we offer comprehensive diagnostics and intervention for diseases of the breast including punch biopsies and pre-operative tumor localization. In cooperation with vascular surgeons we offer a clinic to prepare for vascular surgery. The Angiography/Intervention Section offers a special clinic for planning vascular reopening procedures, liver tumor therapies, dialysis shunt procedures and port placements.

Research

Our main research interests are cardiac imaging by CT and MRT (CT coronary angiography, vitality diagnostics, integration of imaging for electrophysiological, cardiologic intervention), diagnostics of head and neck tumors, and fetal MR imaging. Molecular imaging makes it increasingly possible to visualize biological processes at the cellular level.

Facts and figures

Our Department is the only one in Hamburg that regularly performs TIPS placements. For these transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS) the portal vein is connected to the inferior vena cava. These shunts are used for portal hypertension caused for instance by liver cirrhosis; they reduce the risk for other collateral pathways like esophageal varices and are helpful in the treatment of ascites. We also do portal vein embolizations to promote liver growth before major surgery.

Department statistics (in 2007)

20 Aorta stents-prosthetic grafts (for abdominal aorta aneurysms)
51 TIPS placements
4 Magnetic resonance tomographs (MRT)
3 Computer tomographs (CT)
3 Positron emission tomographs (PET/CT)

The 25 doctors and 60 radiology technicians in our Department perform over 100,000 tests each year.
