The Department

Our Department offers comprehensive ophthalmological care at the highest medical level. Every year we treat more than 17,000 patients and perform more than 5,000 operations: from cataract and glaucoma surgery to retina surgery to surgery of the eye lid and tear ducts, corrective surgery for strabismus (crossed eyes) as well as cornea transplantations. To maintain our high standard we continually evaluate and update our in-house procedures in a quality management system

Clinics

In special clinics we treat patients with changes in the retina, macula (spot on the retina with the sharpest vision), eyelids and tear ducts as well as the cornea and eye vessels. We examine eye misalignments and treat tumors and glaucoma. We also perform plastic surgery, for example, to correct abnormalities of eyelid position and droopy eyelids. With an external partner we offer laser treatment to correct eyesight.

Research

One of our main research interests is analysis of blood flow in the eye in glaucoma. We also want to establish new therapies for treating diseases of the retina. To do this our scientists are developing an artificial retina chip and performing animal experiments with stem cells. Stem cells - so the hope - should one day be able to replace diseased cell types in the retina.

Facts and figures

In 1981, the German Cornea Bank was set up in the Ophthalmology Department of the UKE. Since then more than 10,000 donor corneas have been prepared here.
