Program description:The fellowship in ophthalmology is tailored for ophthalmologist who plan a short time career in clinical and experimental ophthalmology. The fellow performs the full range of daily clinical work, surgical training and experimental research projects under the direct supervision of full time faculty.
The fellowship includes routine procedures on the ward and in the outpatient service, assistance and trainee program in intraocular surgery and participation in the emergency duty service of our clinic.
The innovative and progressive structure of our department provides full range of intraocular surgery from refractive surgery, anterior segment surgery, posterior segment surgery, ocular plastic surgery and squint surgery. In our different diagnostic units we have special technical devices for electrophysiology, glaucoma diagnostic, angiography and ultrasonography. Daily consultation hours in the regular outpatient service as well as defined hours for laser treatment, keratoplasty follow-up, macular and retinal surgery, glaucoma, anterior segment and ocular plastic surgery are offered.
Each year our fellows rotate through the different subunits of our clinic. Fellows gain valuable clinical experience on ward rounds, in the outpatient service and in modern diagnostic techniques as well as in the operating room. The fellows also involved in clinical research and the wide variety of experimental procedures in our three laboratories for experimental ophthalmology, cornea banking and molecular biology.
Specific educational opportunities include observation and participation of general and specialized procedures, review of daily case material, review and education sessions with the faculty, attending departmental and interdepartmental conferences, self instructional education programs and ophthalmology teaching collection. We offer the opportunity to receive advanced training in all spectrums of ophthalmology, including clinical praxis, knowledge for retinal therapy for all kind of ocular diseases as well as special procedures like innovative progressive glaucoma surgery, refractive surgery and intraocular surgery.
The overall purpose of the program is to provide clinical experience and research enrichment. In our modern clinic we offer capacity for 87 inpatients on 4 wards with 160 colleagues. Annually we perform 4600 surgeries, treat 2200 inpatients and 15.000 outpatients - our fellows individual interests may be satisfied on demand.
DurationShort-term fellowship: a 12 week-program tailored individually
For long-term fellowship over 6 months we offer the possibility to reach MD degree by experimental or clinical research.
Basic eligibilityPossession of ophthalmology board certification in the respective country of applicant.
