Hamburg City:

Hamburg city lies in the north of Germany, it is the biggest city in north Germany considering the area and the number of inhabitants, also from the economical importance as it is the biggest harbor in Germany.

Hamburg has an international airport which connects it to the different cities of the world on almost daily basis.

Hamburg University:

Hamburg university is considered one of the biggest universities in Germany, it has an international reputation as it has many cooperation agreements with many of the reputable universities in Europe and the United States of America.

Also, there are international professors in the different academic and clinical departments in the university.

Hamburg university always has an advanced position in the annual rank of the German universities.

Ophthalmology Department:

The ophthalmology department is considered to be one of the most important clinical departments in the university hospital, this is for the good reputation and the high scientific standard which the working doctors, especially Prof. Richard, the chairman of the department, have.

The ophthalmology department is the biggest department in north Germany, and it is the second university hospital department in Germany considering the number of surgeries done per year, and it is considered the first department in Hamburg university hospital concerning the annual income.

It is formed of 6 floors with the capacity of 87 beds and prof. Richard is responsible for annual funds for research with 500,000 Euro per year.

The department contains the most recent investigative instruments like the colored Doppler, HRT, OBF, OCT, field of vision, corneal topography, ultrasound, VEP, ERG, multifocal ERG, FFA, ICG ...

Cataract:

Cataract surgery is done by the most recent ultrasound machines (phakoemulsification) through a very small incision about 3 mm and a foldable intraocular lens is implanted instead of the cataractous lens which is removed by the phako machine.

A new type of lenses (Accommodative lens) is implanted to allow the patient to have the chance to see both near and far vision without glasses. The surgery is done without anesthesia, only with topical anesthetic eye drops.

Glaucoma:

A very advanced glaucoma clinic is supervised by P.D. Dr. Maren Klemm, it is equipped by the latest investigative instruments allowing early detection of glaucoma, and efficient follow up of the cases.

The surgeons of the glaucoma unit are well trained and they are following the updated surgical techniques like deep sclerotomy with implantation, goniotomy and goniectomy. Also, the critical cases are treated successfully with diode laser.

Posterior Segment (Retina and Vitreous):

The posterior segment unit is considered one of the most important and reputable units in the ophthalmology department. It is supervised by Prof. Richard, the chairman of the ophthalmology department and the general secretary of the European Society of Retinal Surgeons.

All types of surgeries are done in the unit, especially the most recent surgeries like macular translocation, removal of subretinal neovascular membranes, and management of age related macular degeneration either surgically or by photo dynamic therapy.

All stages of diabetic retinopathy are successfully treated either surgically or by laser photocoagulation.

Prof. Richard is one of the earliest surgeons in the world who are doing successful experiments on the implantation of electronic chips on the retinal surface which allows the people who lost their vision to regain their vision once more.

Oculoplastic Unit:

Different types of lid surgeries, lacrimal apparatus surgeries, blepharoplasty and ptosis surgeries are done in the unit.

Strabismus (squint) Unit:

All types of strabismus are successfully treated either by medical treatment and exercises or by surgical treatment in the unit which is supervised by Prof. Schultz who is considered one of the imminent names in the field of squint in Germany.

Corneal Transplantation (Keratoplasty):

The oldest eye bank in Germany is present in the Hamburg University Hospital eye department. It supplies the surgeons with the corneal grafts to do the patients a successful corneal transplantation operation.

Refractive Surgery:

Myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism are successfully treated by the updated Excimer laser machine using the wave front technology.
