Analysis of the 4D Cine-MR Cardiac Image Data
Spatial-temporal MR image sequences of the heart contain information about shape and motion changes and pathological structures after myocardial infarction
(see Fig. 1).

Fig. 1: This figure presents five frames of a Cine-MR image sequence (a-e). Infarct area and MO can be identified in the corresponding DE-MR image (f).
In this project a software system called HeAT (Heart Analysis Tool) for quantitative analysis of 4D MR image sequences of infarct patients is presented. HeAT supports interactive segmentation of anatomical and pathological structures. Registration of Cine- and DE-MR image data is applied to enable their combined evaluation during the analysis process (see Fig. 2).

Fig. 2: Visualization of the results of direct contour overlay before (a) and after (b) rigid registration. Segmentation of the infarct area is presented in (c).
Partitioning of the myocardium in segments enables the analysis with high local resolution (see Fig. 3). Corresponding segments are generated and used for inter/intra patient comparison.

Fig. 3: Visualization of the segmented myocardial structure (a) with endocard (green) and epicard (red) and the partitioning in 100 myocardial segments of the myocardium in full (b) and detailed (c) view in Cine-MR.
Quantitative parameters were extracted and visualized (see Fig. 4). Parameters like endocard movement in the infracted area of 10 infarct patients were computed in HeAT.

Fig. 5: Representation of the quantitative parameters for all myocardial segments. The absolute values [mm] of endocardial movement (yellow circles) and the difference in wall thickness between end-diastolic and end-systolic phase (blue triangles) are displayed as well as the transmurality [%] of the infarct area (red diamonds) and the MO (green boxes).
Generally, parameters in the infarct area show the expected dysfunctional characteristics. Based on these parameters passive endocardial movement and myocardial areas with decreased contraction were identified.
