Description

In June 2000, the medical faculty of the University of Hamburg decided to establish a working group "Migration and Health". The working group was operational by October 2000.

The existing project "Health care of migrants in the University Medical Centre Hamburg - overcoming language and cultural barriers" was taken over by the working group "Migration and Health" in order to hand over this project to an external service provider in the near future. The outsourcing of this project was completed in 2002.

Against the background of working on concepts of maintaining and improving quality for the participating institutions of health care and welfare in Hamburg, experiences are made regarding this service (Interpreters, health care of migrants) and results are evaluated. A part of this assignment was to create a process instruction for the quality control handbook regarding assignment of interpreters with patients speaking different languages. Current legal requirements and specific objectives of the institutions for quality control and optimisation of processes were taken into account (VA 07DIE19 Interpreting and Translation).

Networks and Cooperations

The basis for our work is the continuous expansion of our already existing networks: internal hospital networks, regional health care and welfare networks in Hamburg and nationally on local, political and scientific level as well as cooperation with companies/ free enterprises. On an international level existing structures are maintained and expanded, especially with scientific facilities and language/ interpreter institutions. In the area of medical development the cooperation with international institutions is continued. Here, the main focus of health care of migrants is seen from a south-south and south-north perspective.
