Zoltan Lukacs, PhD, is the laboratory head of the Newborn Screening and Metabolic Laboratory of the Institute of Clinical Chemistry/Dept. of Pediatrics at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany. After receiving a prize from the German Chemical Industrial Society for outstanding results on his high school exam, Dr. Lukacs received a grant from the Bavarian Institution for the Gifted, which he used to study food chemistry at the Julius-Maximilians University in Würzburg from 1991 to 1995. His PhD thesis, entitled Microbial Asymmetric Synthesis: Reduction of Hydroperoxides and Hydroxylation of Unfunctionalized Hydrocarbons, won a faculty prize in 2000. He is a member of several professional societies, including the International Society for Neonatal Screening (ISNS) and the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (SSIEM). Dr. Lukacs is the 2007 winner of the Dussault Award of the International Society for Neonatal Screening, a distinction for young investigators.
