Before import goods in containers, wood or corn are shipped or while they are being transported by sea, they are often chemically treated or fumigated to kill pests. From this, incalculable medical risks result not only for seamen on board the vessel, but also for those who unload or store the goods in the country of destination.

Examples of Fumigants:
Affected patients often have to suffer for a long time from a combination of symptoms, mainly including headaches, vertigo and nausea as well as dyspnoea and other airway afflictions. Other complaints often affect skin (itching, erythema), mucus membranes, nose and eyes. Typical symptoms after intoxication with fumigants are pins and needles in arms or legs, loss of muscle strenght, mood variations, unususal exhaustion, fatigue or reduced fittness.
These and other complaints are mentioned and often the reason is not identified. The intoxication might have happened long ago before target-aimed diagnostics are made. This way, essential findings are lost.
