Management and staff, in all areas of the Hamburg-Eppendorf University Medical Center, go to great lengths to provide the necessary infrastructure and facilities for optimized present and future care of patients. This is clearly shown by:

• extensive building improvements on the grounds of the UKE
• a younger team of clinical directors
• better integration of research and teaching, with reorientation in teaching and emphasis on research
• the development of a clinic for intensive care medicine
• the standardization of clinical processes by introducing and using clinical pathways
• the establishment of tertiary service and medical facilities (heart center, outpatient center)

These measures will ensure and extend the performance and efficiency of the UKE.
